When you think of North Korean schools, naturally, you would think that the school was located somewhere in North Korea. But what many don’t know is that there is a bubble of people of North Korean descent who live in Japan. In Tokyo, there is actually a large North Korean school. How did this happen? In 1945, there were North Koreans who were forcibly removed from their home country and forced to live in Japan as labourers. Today, their descendents still live in Japan and their families don’t want them to forget their roots or where they came from. Because Japan doesn’t allow dual citizenship, the students who attend this North Korean school can’t visit North Korea, which they refer to as the “motherland.” There are some bizarre things that take place in these schools, most of which are unbelievable and dark. Even with the tension between North Korea and Japan, these students still side with the motherland.
