It’s no secret: industry is the best thing for us but the worst thing for the planet. To supply the needs of 7.5 billion people and counting, we need resources. And since we can’t yet harvest from outer space, Earth pays the price for our existence. Imperial humans have stormed through the planet, leaving no spot untouched and no source of energy unexploited. Animals are often the first to go, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not, and sometimes without our knowledge. If they prove useful, we farm ‘em, turning them into biotic machines for consumption. If they don’t prove useful, we eradicate them. And if they neither harm nor benefit us, we make them extinct in unrelated ways. This ideology of absolute self-fulfillment has gotten so out of hand that even beloved animals - the stuff of storybooks, movies, playtime, and dreams - are victims of the human machine, and we may be too late to stop it. There’s still hope, however, and with the lessening of human entitlement may be the liberation of the nonhumans. Earth will thank us. With the advent of superintelligence, maybe one day we can return the favor - doing for her what she did for us - but that might mean our extinction.
