Being an Olympic athlete is an honor, but sadly, some people don’t live up to our expectations. There have been many instances of shocking instances of cheating at the Olympic games, most of which end up ruining the athlete’s careers. We’ve all been angry at a ref at some point, but Angel Matos went way too far, earning him a lifetime ban from his sport. Then there’s the case of Tonya Harding, which is as notorious as it is controversial. Some athletes like Justin Gatlin and LaShawn Merritt came up with creative excuses for their violations, but they’re probably more embarrassing than the truth would have been. Tatyana Firova and her fellow Russian athletes were ordered to return their silver medals, but they simply refused to, which we didn’t know was an option! And of course, we have Lance Armstrong. This disgraced former athlete is now a villain in the public eye, which has cost him an estimated $100 million.
