Athletics is generally a thankless pursuit. Unless you’re a member of a major professional sports league, much of your life will be exhausting your mental and physical capabilities for a mere chance at success. As an athlete, you will find no shortage of opportunities to compete and test yourself against others, but you will most likely fail. If you’re one of those rare competitors who succeed at a single level, there are still many more levels to conquer before you have that chance at greatness. And even once you’ve left all national competitors in your wake and have been invited to the Olympic qualifiers, competing against athletes from all over the world, you still need to place high, or you’ll wash out and fall back to zero, having to start over again or give up entirely. Further, even if you make the Olympics, greatness is achieved not merely by competing, or even medaling, but by breaking records. Then, only then, will your name not fade with the closing ceremony - and there will remain that ever-present chance that your triumph will be evoked by strangers, making the universe a little less lonely, and death a little less final. That’s what the following athletes feel – if we’re gracious enough to remember.
