With Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announcing their engagement, it seems like we are about to have an American in the palace. But that isn’t the first time that this has happened. Here are 5 Times Americans Have Become Royalty.

People say that they are willing to give up everything for love, but how many would give up a seat on the throne? That’s exactly what Edward, the Prince of Wales did when he saw Wallis Simpson. He wasn’t allowed to take the throne and be married to a divorced woman so he gave up the throne and the two became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

Grace Kelly was not only an amazing actress, she was also a princess. She met Prince Rainier III of Monaco at a photoshoot in France. He was looking for a wife at the time and thought that Grace would be the perfect fit. She gave up acting and moved to Monaco for him and the two lived together. Sadly, her life was cut short when she had a stroke that led her to lose control of her car.

And then there is Meghan Markle. She grew up in Los Angeles and decided to pursue acting. She probably thought she had hit it big when she landed a role on “Suits” but little did she know that she would later receive an engagement ring from a royal!
