Life in North Korea is a mystery for many of us beyond its borders. With such strict rules and regulations, people on the outside rarely get the chance to see what it’s like to live there. The lives of the women in North Korea are particularly hard. Here is The Secret Lives of North Korean Women.

North Korean women can only choose from one of a few approved haircuts. There are 28 approved haircuts in total, but some of them are for men. Women who are unmarried are allowed to wear their hair long and flowy, whereas women who are wed must choose shorter, more conservative hairstyles.

The fear of divorce is always there for women in North Korea. In this country, nothing is more important than the state and party affiliation. If a woman does something that is out of line with party ideology, she could be easily divorced and will have a much harder time in society on her own.

Many women in North Korea live in prison camps. The punishment for tiny infractions against the law are severe and if you do something that goes against the state, you could spend your whole life in a prison camp. If a family member commits a crime, you may also end up spending time in a prison camp with them.
