There was a lot going on during the ancient Roman empire. The people were creating amazing architectural works, bodies of literature, and artwork that we still hold in high regard today. But while those are the parts of their culture that we all know about, it turns out that the people were doing some truly strange things that got left out of most history books. The upper class in Rome even dictated what colors people could wear, and unless you were wealthy enough, they better not catch you wearing purple. Another law dictated what color hair was acceptable, and Roman women found the rules about who could go blonde to be completely unacceptable. We all know that the people in ancient Rome were obsessed with gladiators, but did you know that they would actually purchase vials of their sweat and skin cells? We have heard of being sports fans, but that is a bit farther than most of us would go! Another favorite pastime was chariot racing, and sometimes the racers needed a little extra boost of energy to make it across the finish line. This beverage they were known to drink, was a favorite of Emperor Nero, and when you hear the secret ingredient, you’ll stick to Red Bull. Being struck by lightning during any period in history isn’t enjoyable, but if it happened to someone in ancient Rome, they weren’t even allowed a proper burial. They were considered property of the god, Jupiter, whom they had clearly angered somehow.
