A Matter of Life or Death: LGBTQ+ Refugees | Chosen Family | Part 5 ─ Tyler Oakley

Being LGBTQ+ in the United States can definitely be difficult, but in some countries around the world you can go to jail or even be killed if you are out of the closet. I met two resilient members of our community, Shadi (from Syria) and Sharifa (from Uganda) who went to incredible lengths to flee their home countries to avoid persecution. Stories like these bring humanity to the refugee crisis that has been surrounded by xenophobia in our country - and prove that we have to stick together for all members of our (even international) Chosen Family.

This World Refugee Day, meet the people behind the crisis - and discover what makes them #MoreThanARefugee.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) invited seven YouTube creators to get to know refugees around the world. See more stories at youtube.com/youtube

Never before has the world witnessed such a dramatic scale of human suffering. In fact, more people have been forced to flee their homes by conflict and crisis today than at any time since World War II.

Last year, the number of people displaced by conflict worldwide surpassed 65 million. In Syria alone, six years of war have driven 13.5 million people from their homes. Millions more have been uprooted in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Yemen and elsewhere. If displaced people could form a country, it would be the 21st largest in the world, with a population greater than Great Britain’s.Only 1% of the world’s refugees are resettled to a third country.

More about IRC:
The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 28 offices across the U.S. helping people to survive and regain control of their future.
