Skynet…errr, Google is an amazing company expanding all the time and seemingly making our lives infinitely easier. There’s gmail, the Google search function, a cloud based program that is likely to develop self-awareness and wipe us all out. Ok, back on topic. One of the biggest things Google provides us with is Google Earth – an app where the majority of the Earth’s surface is captured in high quality satellite imagery. Additionally, many areas can be “zoomed in” on with Street View so you can look over a location as if you were there. This has already changed the way we do things. Planning a trip? You can use Google to look at routes and even use Street View to see what various locations look like in person ahead of time. Buying a house? Since realtors are geniuses with making a property look great all the time, Google images can give you a more realistic image of a potential property and its surrounding neighborhood before you’ve even seen it in person.
Then there’s the police and crime. Interestingly, Google Earth has turned out to be quite a help in the ongoing war on crime. Satellite imagery allows officers to see and map out an area of interest in great detail while street view can provide invaluable detail. More so, Google Earth has actually been at the center of solving crimes thanks to good timing (not for the criminals) concerning when the satellite or Street View car passed through. From petty theft to home invasions to murder – Google Earth has provided vital clues to police which, in many instances, has proven to be the key evidence to solve a case.
